Chapter 4: The Edit
By Monday morning the video had two million views.
I sat in the nurse manager's office on the fourth floor of the children's hospital with my badge on my scrubs and my hands folded in my lap.
My manager had printed something out.
She set the page in front of me and didn't look at it.
"We got an email at six a.m.," she said. "From a Danielle Lorring. She describes herself as a concerned friend."
I read it.
It said I had suffered a breakdown at my wedding and had been "erratic and verbally aggressive" for weeks.
It said she worried for the safety of my patients.
"She's asking whether I'm fit to work with children," I said.
"She is."
"She married my fiancé last Monday. I found out on Friday."
"I know," said my manager. "Half the unit watched your clip and half of them have texted me the whole thing, because a guest uploaded a better version at midnight."
She turned her laptop around.
It was a seven-minute recording from the back of the ballroom.
It had the certificate, the seal, Danielle's voice on the speakers and Preston saying, "Danielle did, it was her idea."
It had forty thousand views and a lot of comments.
"I'm not going to write you up for being lied to in public," my manager said. "But I'd like to know what you want to do about her."
"I'd like to talk to HR with the whole file."
"Good. I'll set it up."
She stood and shook my hand, which she had never done before.
In the hallway outside, four nurses in the middle of a shift change fell silent when they saw me.
