Chapter 10: Staff Meeting

At nine fifty-five on Monday I handed Sam a small white remote in the doorway of the staff conference room.

"What is it?" he said.

"A present."

"It has one button."

"It has one button and a dial." I turned it so he could see. "The dial goes up. The button turns it on."

He looked at the remote, and at my face, and at the front of my skirt.

I watched him work it out.

His eyes went black.

"Lucy," he said, in a tone I can only call reverent. "Where is the other half?"

"Where do you think?"

I had bought it online on Saturday, in a state of mind I will not describe.

It had arrived by courier on Sunday in a plain brown box.

It was small and smooth and silver, with a curved tip.

I had put it in that morning in the ladies' room with a hand that shook.

I could feel it now with every step.

"Here are the rules," I said.

"You sit on the other side of the table."

"You keep the remote in your pocket."

"When I nod, you press the button and turn the dial one click."

"When I shake my head, you stop."

"And if the whole room hears?"

"Then you'd better be good at this."

His mouth curved.

It was the first real smile I had seen from him, slow and wicked, and it went straight down my spine.

"Yes, curator," he said.
