Chapter 9: Cloud Boat

By the fifth night, the cloud boat had left the last green mountains of Heaven behind.

Below the hull, the world was black water and white ice, and the wind that came off it cut.

Han stood at the stern rail in a fur-lined cloak, watching the stars.

There were no sailors.

The boat flew itself, guided by a lamp of spirit-fire at the prow and an old one-eyed crow perched on the mast, muttering directions.

"Port a little, my lord."

"I'm not steering," said Mo, from the deck. "You have a magic lamp."

"Port, anyway."

Han almost smiled.

He heard Mo's steps come up behind him.

A second fur cloak dropped over his shoulders, and big arms closed around his waist.

"You'll freeze," Mo said into his ear.

"I'm a cultivator of four hundred years. I do not freeze."

"You're shivering."

"It's the wind."

"It's the wind," Mo agreed, and kissed his neck.

Han leaned back into the solid warmth of him.

The boat swayed gently, and the stars wheeled above.

"I used to come up on the wall every night," Han said. "At the Fort. I would stand there for an hour. Sometimes two."

"Why?"

"The heart wouldn't let me sleep. It would beat twice when I was alone."

"Twice?"

"It beat for two. Always. I never knew why."
