Chapter 20: The Hearing
The hearing started at two, in the same atrium where I had taken off my glasses.
A hundred and forty folding chairs were full again.
Whitney sat at a small table facing them, in her best cream suit, with her lawyer on her left.
She had put on fresh lipstick.
It was the reddest thing in the room.
At the long table in front of the staff sat the chairman, an investigator from outside the company, and me.
The investigator was a gray-haired woman with half-moon glasses, who had never been paid by Marlowe and said so in her first sentence.
"This is not a trial," she told the room. "It's a hearing on whether Ms. Dole's conduct supports dismissal for cause."
"Anyone with direct knowledge may speak."
Nobody moved.
For about ten seconds, I thought the fear in that room was stronger than anything I could do.
Then the man in the borrowed tie stood up.
