Chapter 21: The Seventeenth Floor

Room 1702 had a window the height of the wall.

The whole of Nanjing lay in it, lit and quiet and a very long way down.

Han stood in front of the glass in his shirtsleeves with the key card still in his hand.

He had not said a word since the lift.

Tong Yu shut the door behind them and leaned his back against it.

"You were magnificent," he said. "I haven't told you."

"I watched you for three years and I never once saw you do something without knowing how it would end."

He shook his head. "Tonight you didn't know, and you did it anyway."

"I knew a little," said Han. "I knew you would be in the chair."

He turned from the window.

His face was calm and his eyes were bright.

He looked ten years younger than the man who had stood at the foot of a dais an hour ago.

"I have been thinking about the nights," he said.

"What about them?"

"You have led, or we have shared it. I would not change a minute."

He crossed the carpet with the card still in his hand, set it on the table, and stopped in front of him.

"Tonight I would like to lead."

Tong Yu felt it go through him, from the scalp down.

"In the lift," said Han, "you told four witnesses you intended to take my hand and not give it back."
