Chapter 11: Four Chairs
They carried the oak table in from the garage without the leaves.
It came out a squat square, just big enough for four chairs, with everyone's knees nearly touching.
I put a white tablecloth over it, because the top was scarred, and then I put the pot roast in the middle.
It had been in the oven since four.
I had trimmed the carrots, and mashed the potatoes with too much butter, and set out a dish of my mother's pickled beets that nobody was going to eat.
"This looks incredible," Mikko said, sitting down on my left. "Is this a test?"
"It's dinner," I said.
"It feels like a test."
"Eat your carrots."
Tanner took the chair on my right.
Kou took the one across from me, and straightened his fork, and then his knife, and then looked at me over his glasses with his dark eyes serious.
I cut the roast and passed plates, and for a few minutes we were nothing but a table of people eating.
