Chapter 22: Last Day
Britta's POV
I came down the stairs in Tanner's flannel shirt, with my hair on end, and found two men in my kitchen doorway, standing very straight.
"Good morning," I said.
"Britta," Kou said. "I have a confession. It is about Rochester."
"Go ahead."
"On Tuesday, in the van, I told my foreman at the shop that I was not taking the Rochester job. I did not ask you first." He drew himself up. "You said nothing was to be decided before the twenty-fourth. I decided it. I am very sorry, and I am not sorry at all."
I looked at Mikko.
"I told Tanner's uncle I would rather paint your ceiling for free," Mikko said. "He said I was nuts. I said yes. Then I called my dad and told him the sauna season starts without me."
"That's the same confession," I said.
"It's a different ceiling."
"You both decided without me."
"Yes," Kou said.
"You broke rule three."
"Today is the twenty-third," Kou said. "We are one day early. We accept the penalty."
"Fine us," Mikko said. "Take it out of the paint budget."
Tanner came in behind me from the stairs, in yesterday's jeans, and stood in the kitchen with his hands at his sides.
I looked at the three of them in the morning light.
"Is there a fourth confession?" I said.
"No," Tanner said.
"Good. I was going to fine you all in coffee."
I laughed, and my voice shook, and nobody looked away.
I went upstairs and dressed and drove to school and taught Thursday with my head somewhere over the kitchen.
On Friday I took the day off.
At noon the blinds in the kitchen were up, and the whole room was full of white light.
