Chapter 5: Phoebe's Couch

Phoebe lived off campus, over a hardware store, in an apartment her uncle paid for and she was embarrassed about.

"It has a dishwasher," she said, unlocking the door. "I'm told that's a scandal in itself."

A gray cat with three legs was sitting on the only couch.

It looked at me, looked at her tote of paperbacks, and left the room.

"That's the cat," Phoebe said. "He hates books. He's very committed to it."

I laughed for the first time in four days, and then I sat down on the couch and cried.

She didn't say anything.

She put a box of tissues in my lap and went to the kitchen and made grilled cheese, and the smell of butter got me through the worst of it.

When I stopped, she handed me a plate.

"Okay," she said. "Facts. I've been at Halsey sixteen days and I'm already in a viral scandal. My mother is going to be thrilled."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. I'm sorry I didn't open the envelope sooner."

She sat on the floor with her back against the radiator and her plate on her knee.

"I want to tell you why Brady picked me. It matters."

"Because you're pretty."

"Because my uncle just paid for the new arts wing." She pointed with her sandwich. "Two days after my transfer, Brady found me at the coffee cart and said his father thought my uncle was a legend. He wanted my uncle's number. He wanted me at his table at the Founders' Gala."

"He liked your picture."

"He liked my last name." She shrugged. "I'm an introduction, Cora. I'm a donor's niece with a nice smile, and he was going to give me your letter to get me to dinner."
