Chapter 13: The Witch Trial
Twenty swords came up in a narrow stair.
There was no room to shift in that corridor, and a wolf in a cell would be the proof Leoric needed.
So I held out both wrists, one in front of the other, and let the lamp shine on the dead grey scar.
"Moon Court law," I said. "A witch is tried before the full Moot. Not in a cellar."
The stiff elder in green opened his mouth, shut it, and looked at the priestess's empty place beside him.
"She is correct," he said at last, like a man swallowing a bone.
Leoric smiled.
It was the smile he had worn on the pyre, tired and kind, and my stomach turned over.
"Then the Moot shall have her," he said. "And my healer shall have her badge."
A guard unpinned the silver ring from his own belt, where he had been keeping it, and fixed it to Perdita's collar.
She touched it with two fingers and did not look at me.
They marched me up the wet stairs with a sword at each shoulder and Eirik shouting my name behind us.
