Chapter 15: Two Came Back
They laid her in Rhydian's own tent, because it was the nearest roof that was not Leoric's.
Eirik had been freed the moment the elders knelt.
He carried the cart-bed in himself, as gently as a man carrying a sleeping child.
My father sat on one side of her with her thin hand between both of his.
I sat on the other.
Rhydian stood at the tent flap with his arms crossed, and he did not leave.
"Close it," Anwen said. "No, leave it. The Goddess likes to listen."
Her voice was almost gone. She spoke in pieces, with her eyes on the lamp.
"I rang the bell on the morning of your Rite. I asked for one woman to come back, and I paid the price of one."
"What price?" I asked.
"Fifty years of sight, and what was left of my heart."
My father made a small sound.
"She answered with a scream," said Anwen. "Yours. I thought that was the whole of it."
Her fingers tightened on his.
"It was not. The bell is a rope, child, and a rope has two ends."
She breathed.
