Chapter 16: Stay

The fever broke at dawn, and by nine Seo-jin was tied to the bed.

Si-on had used his own school tie.

He looped it twice through the leather of the collar on Seo-jin's wrist and knotted it to the iron rail.

He tested the knot with a hard tug.

"Boxers know knots," he said.

"I know you are enjoying this."

"Yes."

Du-sik had gone down to the noodle shop for breakfast, with a long look at both of them.

He had said he would be an hour.

He had said it twice.

Si-on sat on the edge of the mattress in his trousers and nothing else.

The room was warm and bright, and the laundry in the neighbour's window snapped in the wind.

"Say you heard me last night," he said.

"I heard you."

"I said I'm staying," Si-on said. "Say it back."

"You are staying."

"Say you believe it."

The grey eyes were clear again, and tired, and they did not leave his face.

"I am trying to," Seo-jin said. "It is difficult. I keep waiting for the door."

"Then watch the door."

Si-on got up, crossed the room, and turned the bolt.

He came back and pulled the cord out of his pocket, with the little key on it, and hung it around his own neck.

It lay against his bare chest, light and warm.

"There's your door," he said. "It's locked. I'm on this side of it."

He put his knee on the mattress.

He took care of the bandage and tucked the sheet down below the dressing.

Then he put his mouth on the bare stomach just under the edge of it.
