Chapter 22: The Bracelet

The package came on Thursday, to the green door of my new office, in a padded envelope with a convent's return address.

The baker brought it over himself, since I had no mailbox.

He held it out between two fingers.

"From the nuns," he said. "I didn't open it."

"You wanted to."

"A little."

I took it inside and set it on the counter beside my mother's pot.

I had a folding table by then, and a chair, and a laptop on a stack of Raf's shoe boxes.

The envelope was light.

I slit it with a letter opener and tipped it out.

A folded money order for twenty dollars slid onto the wood.

Under it was a ring in a twist of tissue.

It was a thin gold wedding band, worn to a pale line on one side.

I knew it before I had it in my fingers.

My mother had taken it off in the hospital in the last week, when her hands got too thin to hold it.

I had looked for it for four years.

I had decided a nurse had taken it, and that was a thing I could carry.

There was one sheet of notebook paper.

The handwriting was blue, round and careful, with no hearts anywhere.
