Chapter 23: Sunday Night

On Sunday my sister brought me soup.

She wore a gray apron over a plain black dress, with her hair pinned flat and no lipstick.

She came down the long table behind the cousins, carrying a tureen that was heavy for her.

She did not look up.

Forty people watched her do it.

She stopped at my chair and ladled the soup into my bowl with a hand that shook.

"Here is your soup," Paola said.

"Thank you."

She stood a second longer than she had to.

Then she moved on to Raf's bowl, and filled it without spilling, and went on down the table.

The old uncle across from me watched her go with his cracked gold tooth showing.

He said, to no one, "She has good hands for it."

His mother, at the stove door, looked at me.

I looked back and gave her a small nod.

She turned to her pots.

It was an ordinary Sunday, and nobody mentioned the soup again.

When the plates were cleared, the priest said grace for the second time.

The boys under the tablecloth were bribed with cannoli.

Raf pushed back his chair.

He stood with his right hand flat on the table and his left in his pocket.

The room quieted at once.

"I have a question," he said. "I wanted you all to hear it."

I put down my fork.

My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my wrists.

"Carla," Raf said.

"Yes?"

"I'm going to ask you something. You can say no. Forty people will still eat my mother's pastry."

Somebody laughed, nervously.
