We were married at eleven in the church on Atwells Avenue, in front of forty-one people and a priest who had been told the date by someone else.
I wore the green dress his mother had taken in, with my hair down and my mother's ring on its chain beneath the collar.
Raf wore the black suit and no tie.
At the altar he looked at me for so long that the priest cleared his throat twice.
I had not planned to cry, and I did not, until I saw Pio in the second pew with his cap crushed in both hands.
By one o'clock we were all at the yellow house.

The long dining room was warm and loud, and the white tablecloths ran the length of the house.
His mother met me at the door in her black dress and apron, five feet tall, with flour on her sleeve.
She looked me up and down, from my shoes to my knot of hair.
"You ate today?" she said.
"Not yet, Mrs. Colucci."
"Good." She took my arm. "Nobody eats before my table."
"Mama," Raf said behind me, "she's my wife."
