Chapter 18: Taylor Street

Rory didn't say anything.

I stepped in front of him anyway, onto the wet pavement, close enough to Armando to see the rain in his eyelashes.

"Then don't stop them," I said. "Sit at your mother's table and watch. You're good at watching."

He flinched.

It was small. But I saw it.

"I'm telling you so you'll stay here," he said.

"I know why you're telling me."

"Gianna."

"You don't get to say my name. I told you yesterday."

He looked at Rory over my shoulder.

"Barrow. You're the sensible one. Talk her out of it."

"No," said Rory.

Armando stood in the rain a moment longer.

Then he turned up his collar and walked off toward the river on foot, alone.

On Sunday he came to Rotherhithe.

We were at the table with the beef half carved when somebody knocked on the red front door.

Rory's mum went to answer it with the carving fork still in her hand, because she'd been in the middle of a sentence and didn't believe in stopping.

I heard the door open.

I heard her go quiet.

Rory was up and in the hall before I'd put my napkin down.

Armando stood on the front step in a clean charcoal coat, with a long white envelope in his hand.

The neighbor over the road was washing her car. She'd stopped.

"Mrs. Barrow," Armando said. "I'm sorry to interrupt your lunch. I'd like five minutes with you about your son."
