Chapter 19: The Runway

Helena's POV

Cillian stood in the loading bay with blood on his shirt and a tarp in the bed of the truck behind him.

I pulled the tarp back.

Damian and Camilla lay strapped together with their eyes open, and Camilla's whole face was swollen from crying.

"They tried for the five o'clock boat," Cillian said. "I didn't hurt her. I hurt him a little."

"I can see that," I said.

Damian's lip was split, and he was still trying to smile.

"Helena, honey. Call this off. We can talk about the grave."

"Don't call me honey," I said.

I took out my phone and sent one message to the detective in the wrinkled coat.

"Front row. Nine o'clock. Bring handcuffs and four officers."

Then I turned to Cillian.

"Put them behind the curtain and stay with them."

"Helena, I..."

"Stay with them," I said. "I'll tell you when."

He stayed.

The glass hall was full by ten to nine.

Four hundred seats, and every one of them taken, because the story of the hem had gone around the world twice in a week.

The detective sat in the front row between a woman from a magazine and a man with a camera, and four plainclothes officers sat behind him with their coats buttoned.

I did not watch the show from the wings.

I walked the last dress myself.

It was the cream gown from the first night, the one with my mother's blue stitch in the hem, and I wore my scar bare.

I stepped onto the white paper and felt every light on my face.

The room stood up before I reached the end.

It was not a polite standing.

Someone cried out my name, and then everyone was clapping, and it went on until I thought the glass would shake.
