Chapter 15: Kathleen's POV

Kathleen's POV

Marek came up the stairs in his coat, ready for whatever I had decided to do to him.

I had my own coat on already, and my keys in my hand.

"Not here," I said. "Savin Hill."

He looked at me and did not ask why.

We drove across Dorchester at one in the morning with the heater roaring and nobody behind us.

The cape sat dark on its street, with the police tape still hanging off the garage door in the wind.

I did not look at the garage.

I unlocked the front door with the key I had kept in my coat pocket for three weeks.

I walked down the hall to the kitchen and turned on the light.

Nobody had been in since the night of the wake.

Drawers still lay on the linoleum where Frank's men had dumped them, and the cabinet doors hung open.

The oak table stood where it always stood, with three chairs pushed against the wall.

The fourth chair was gone.

I had put its broken pieces out with the trash myself, on the morning of the twenty-second, with my arm aching.

I stood in the middle of the floor and looked at the refrigerator.

That was the place.

"The third of January," I said. "He had me against that door. I'd said something about the money."

Marek stood in the doorway with his hands at his sides.

He had gone quiet and huge, and I could feel how much of the room he filled.

"Don't say anything," I said. "I don't want you to be sorry in here."

"What do you want?"

"I want this kitchen back."

I took off my coat and let it fall.

"I've scrubbed that floor on my knees. I've cooked every dinner in this room for five years. I'm not giving him one more inch of it."
