Chapter 19: Sunday in Decatur
Darius's POV
My mother's table in Decatur seats four, and on the second Sunday of January it held five.
She had pulled over the piano bench for me and given Amber the good chair, the one with arms.
Amber sat in it with a plate of smothered chicken, small and straight and a little pink at the ears.
She called my mother "Mrs. Lockett" until my mother told her to stop.
"I'm Ms. Lockett to the church," my mother said. "I'm Mama to my son. You can be whatever you can say with a full mouth."
"Yes, ma'am," said Amber, and my mother laughed.
I watched Amber the whole meal, and I know she knew it.
I had the offer letter in my jacket on the back of my chair.
It was a thick cream envelope from the electrical workers' training center in Chattanooga.
It had come on the sixth of January, folded in thirds, with a union seal on the top.
A four-year apprenticeship, paid, with benefits and a card at the end of it that would take me out of lifting other people's furniture.
It started the first week of May.
