Chapter 18: The Napkin

"Then your name's on it," Emmett said. "Every vacant line. Twelve buildings."

Truett looked at him.

"I didn't know."

"I believe you," Emmett said. "An auditor won't."

Truett picked the chair up off the floor and set it back at the table.

His hands were still shaking.

"I'm ending it," he said. "Tonight. I'm going home and I'm telling her."

"You don't have to go home," Gussie said, looking at the window.

Headlights had swung into my lot.

A white car. A woman in red getting out of it fast.

Margot had always known where Truett was.

She came in without knocking, with her tote on her shoulder and her phone in her hand.

"You turned your location off," she said to him. "I had to drive by four bars."

Then she saw the card table.

The ledger. The folder. The purple stamps.

She stopped.

For one second she was the scared girl from the parking garage again.

Then she smiled.

"Oh, Tru. Did she give you homework?"

"I read it," Truett said. "All of it."

"Read what? Posey's scrapbook?"

"The bakery, Margot. You took twelve thousand dollars from a woman with a baby and bought me a weekend in New Orleans."
