Chapter 20: The Toast
Margot laughed into the microphone.
"Oh, y'all. It's Posey. She does toasts."
"Of course you may, dear," the committee chair said from the head table, before Mrs. Gaillard could open her mouth. "Go right ahead."
I didn't go to the microphone.
I've been projecting to the back row of a ballroom since I was nineteen.
Emmett stood up beside me and set the green ledger on the table, open.
He'd carried it in under his tailcoat.
"To Margot," I said.
The hall went still.
"Thank you, Margot, for three years of rent."
I turned the page.
"You deposited every check into Merrill Events."
Somebody at the next table set down a fork.
Margot was still holding the microphone.
The whole hall heard her breathe in.
I kept turning pages.
I didn't speed up.
I didn't raise my voice.
I read the month, the number and the thank-you, and then the same three words, again and again.
Merrill Events LLC.
By the tenth check, people at the back were standing to see.
