Chapter 10: Don't Finish It
Captain Jang did not wait at the gate that morning.
He walked straight across the yard and into the east room without knocking, with his hand resting on the brass ring of his sword belt.
Do-yun was still standing in the middle of the floor, in yesterday's shirt, with the whole night on his skin.
"Captain."
"The silk, Painter."
"It's on the easel in the main room. The Prince is asleep, and I can't..."
"The sheets, then."
Jang nodded at the pile on the floor.
Do-yun's mouth went dry.
He had forty-six sheets now, stacked against the wall, each with the same neck, the same ear, and the same empty oval.
He picked up the top one and held it out.
Jang took it, and the next one, and the next.
He read them, one page at a time.
His heavy beard moved as he chewed the inside of his cheek.
"These are all the same," he said.
"The face comes last, Captain. I draw the body first and the face when I'm sure."
"You have been here eight nights."
"Yes."
"The last man was done in nine."
Jang lowered the sheet.
"He had the whole face on silk by the eighth, and the colors laid in on the ninth."
