Chapter 11: The Door
The doorbell rang at 9:50 on Tuesday morning, and I knew who it was before I got there.
Nobody else in my life pressed a bell exactly twice.
Craig stood on my front step in a pressed linen shirt and rimless glasses.
He had a tan from a golf trip and a folder under his arm.
He smiled at me.
"Jo," he said. "You look well."
"Craig," I said.
"I won't keep you. Can I come in?"
"No," I said.
I stepped out and pulled the door nearly shut behind me, and the heat hit my bare arms.
He raised his eyebrows, pleasantly, and let it go.
"I'm selling the condo in Cabo," he said. "Which changes my numbers. I thought we could talk about adjusting the settlement."
"Adjusting it which way?"
"Oh, you know. Fairness." He opened the folder an inch and closed it again. "I'd like you to think about a number."
"I've thought about a number."
"Jo."
He said it softly, the way he did when I was being difficult.
I stood there in my robe with my coffee.
