Chapter 14: Brake Line

Ronan drove the long way home, on the highway, with every light on.

Cora told him all of it in four minutes: the offer, the bracelet, the river road.

His hands did not move on the wheel, and his knuckles went white.

"She touched your wrist," he said.

"She knew it was from Pearl."

"Did you ever tell her?"

"Never. Pearl and I only talked about it at her kitchen table, on Thursday night."

Ronan did not answer.

At seven the next morning he drove her to a garage on the east side, a low brick building with a hand-painted sign.

"Dead alternator, I'd bet." The mechanic slid under it with a flashlight. "Hold on."

The garage went quiet.

He came out slowly and wiped his hands on a rag.

"Come look at this," he said.

Cora stood under the lifted car, between the old man and Ronan.

He pointed his light at a thin steel tube running along the frame.

"That's your front brake line. Look at the metal."

The line had been sliced across nearly all the way, a clean bright groove, with only a thread of steel still holding it.
