Chapter 8: The Lockbox

"Put that down."

Anson stood in the bedroom doorway in a gray T-shirt, with a coffee cup in each hand.

I was sitting on the rug in his bedroom with a steel box open between my knees.

"Term three," I said. "Nobody hides anything."

"That's my private box."

"Every page is signed Lawrence Whitcroft."

He set both cups on the dresser.

Very carefully, he did not look at the paper.

"Twenty-six million dollars," I said. "That's what he owes you."

"Yes."

"The bank says your total debt is thirty-one. So where did the twenty-six go?"

"Into Whitcroft Holdings."

"Why?"

He sat down on the edge of the bed.

"Six years ago your father came to my father's funeral," Anson said. "He was the only one in the room who cried."

"He said the Whitcroft account would carry Rotherham Logistics through the hard part. A bridge. We'd be family soon, he said."

"Then every few months something broke. A payroll. A fuel bill. A lawsuit."

"He'd call, and he'd say, Anson, just this once."

"And you paid."

"I borrowed, and I paid. He wrote a note each time."

I held up a bundle. "Twenty-six million dollars of notes."

"He promised the shares would cover everything the day I married the heiress."

"I thought the heiress was Portia."

"So did Portia," he said flatly. "Then you walked in."

I stood up with the box in my arms.

It was surprisingly heavy.

"So you need me to sign," I said.

"No."

"The shares are the only thing that pays you back. You told me to get on a bus, and you told me to sign nothing, and you took my father's orders by text. Which is it, Anson?"
