Chapter 23: Pierogi
Mateo said yes before the sun cleared the brick wall.
By Sunday afternoon he had moved in a duffel bag, a toolbox and a poster of the Riverwalk.
We were still unpacking the toolbox when we ran out of time.
My parents' house in Globeville was a narrow brick house with a Virgin Mary in the yard.
The good couch still had its plastic cover, and my mother had been cooking since Friday.
The dining room table had been opened to its full leaf.
It held a platter of pierogi, potato and cheese on one side and sauerkraut and mushroom on the other.
There was a ring of kielbasa and a bowl of cucumbers in sour cream.
There was also a dish of fried onions that nobody had been allowed to touch.
In the middle, on a lace tablecloth my grandmother had brought over on the same boat as the pan, sat a foil tray of tamales.
Mateo's mother had carried it in from the car in both hands, and she and my mother had looked at each other across the doorway.
"Pork?" my mother said.
"Pork and red chile."
"Potato and cheese," my mother said, nodding at her own platter.
"It's the same," Mateo's mother said, in a serious voice. "Dough and something inside."
