Chapter 20: The Town Already Knew

"One bakery," I said, "means everyone has to know."

"It does," said Pauline. "The Chamber meets Tuesday, and I understand there's an anniversary."

She left me with the cream horns and a customer who had stopped pretending to look at the case.

At six o'clock Soren walked across the Feud Line in broad daylight and into my shop.

The whole of Main Street saw him do it, and I did not care.

He shut the door and turned the sign to CLOSED.

"I checked the rules," he said. "Under one bakery there is room for two names."

"That's the whole speech?"

"I wrote a longer one. It had a table."

"Zeman and Vinter," I said.

"Alphabetically that's Vinter and Zeman."

"Soren."

"Zeman and Vinter," he said, and went a very light pink around the ears.

Six hundred people sat on folding chairs under the basketball hoops.

My grandmother and Aksel Vinter sat in the front row, holding hands.
