Chapter 14: The Rule of the Untouched
Wenna sat at the table with the ledger open in front of her and her fingers folded so tightly that the knuckles were white.
Veyron stood behind Isabeau's chair.
His hand rested on her shoulder.
She had put on a robe, and her wrists still held the faint pink lines of the sash.
"Read it," she said.
"I'll read it exactly as it's written."
Wenna turned back to the first page.
"The first High Priest wrote this in the year the Temple took the border. He says the Flame came to a girl in the valley when she was eleven."
"The first Saintess."
"She was called Maren."
Isabeau thought of the white carved woman in the crypt.
"She died at twenty-four," she said slowly. "I saw her tomb."
"She was burned at twenty-four." Wenna's voice shook. "Listen."
She read.
"The vessel's light is strong when she is loved. A girl who is held, and praised, and wanted, and given pleasure, grows to a power that no priest can govern. Maren, loved by a shepherd, lit the whole province in a night, and healed the dying in three valleys, and would not hear the Temple's word."
