Chapter 22: The Ask
"I want a night," Isabeau said.
They were back in the Citadel by dusk.
The armies had camped on opposite sides of the river.
For the first time in three years, nobody on either bank was awake with a weapon.
In the lower town, people stood in the streets and watched them go by, human and demon, whispering.
A woman had held up a baby as Isabeau passed.
Isabeau had healed its ears with a touch, and the woman had wept.
Veyron had pretended not to notice that Isabeau was wiping her own eyes.
Now they stood in the lord's bedchamber, with the shutters open on the white garden, and he was looking at her with his head tilted.
"A night," he said.
"A whole night. Where I'm not brave, and I'm not a saint, and I don't have to carry anything."
"That's an easy thing to ask."
"There's more."
She walked up to him and put both hands on his chest.
"I want you on the bed. I want your hands on the bedpost, and I don't want you to let go until I say."
His eyes darkened.
"Ask me again."
"Please, Veyron. Let me have you."
"Gods," he muttered. "Yes."
He took off his armor himself, piece by piece, and dropped it on the floor.
