Chapter 9: On My Knees
They had four hours before dawn.
Torvin posted guards on every stair of the Citadel, and Isabeau took the king back to the warded chamber and made him sit.
"I'm fine," said Veyron.
"You were dead at noon."
"I was inconvenienced at noon."
She pushed him into the high-backed chair by the dead fire.
He let her, which told her how tired he was.
He looked at the black vein on his right wrist, and flexed his hand, and flexed it again.
"The High Priest will come in at dawn," she said. "He'll look at you, and he'll look at me, and he'll know."
"Know what?"
"I don't know."
She laughed, a little shakily.
"I don't know what I am. I thought I was dying, and I'm not, and I don't know what that means."
He held out his hand.
She didn't take it.
She knelt.
She did it slowly, on the thick wool rug in front of his chair.
Her knees spread on either side of his boots, and her dress pooled around her.
She had knelt in a tent a week ago and offered her life.
