Chapter 8: The Parapet

Torvin carried Veyron back through the gate on a door.

Isabeau walked beside it with both hands pressed to the hole in his chest, and her light poured into him so fast it hurt.

Behind them, eight thousand men watched and did not follow.

The Marshal had screamed for a charge, and not one spear had moved.

By the time the gate closed, the crusade had pulled back a mile to its tents, and nobody could say who had given the order.

She didn't care.

She laid Veyron on the lord's bed in the warded chamber, and tore his shirt open, and looked at what the Temple had made.

The bolt had gone in below his heart.

The iron head was still in him, and it was etched with tiny Flame sigils that glittered.

Where it touched, his skin had gone to ash.

"Hold him," she told Torvin.

"He's the king."

"Then hold the king."

She pulled the bolt out with both hands.

He made a sound she would hear all her life, and his whole body bowed off the sheets.

Black blood welled up out of the wound and smoked on the silk.

She put her palms over it.

She poured everything into him.

The Flame went down her arms, and the hole began to close.

Hour after hour, Isabeau held it open and fed it, while Torvin stood against the wall with his broken horn lowered and said nothing.

The iron's poison fought her.
