Chapter 7: The Parley
"I'm going out to meet them," Isabeau said.
The war council was in the throne hall, the next morning, with a map pinned to the black table.
Torvin had been explaining the river road and the best places to burn it.
Every demon in the room turned to stare at her.
"No," said Veyron.
"The men in that army aren't templars. They're farmers from the Corvane valleys, with spears and a banner."
"They are eight thousand spears."
"They've never seen a demon in their lives." She put her hands flat on the map. "They've been told you eat children. If I walk out, they'll see that I'm alive, and unharmed, and standing by my own choice."
"They'll see a woman in white they can stab."
"Then I'll be a woman in white who's very hard to stab."
His jaw clenched.
He dismissed the council with a flick of his gloved hand, and when the last boots had left the hall, he caught her arm.
"Check your neck."
"What?"
His fingers were on her collarbone, searching, and she felt how unsteady they were.
