Chapter 16: Nuisance
Aidan read it over my shoulder.
His jaw got tighter with every line.
"Nuisance," he said. "What nuisance?"
I found the paragraph and read it out loud.
"Crowds obstructing the public sidewalk. Disruption to neighboring tenants. Unreasonable volume of foot traffic inconsistent with the character of the building."
"Brides," Shauna said. "They're evicting us for brides."
"They're evicting us for being busy."
"Neighboring tenants," Aidan said. "Who? The dentist upstairs? He sent his daughter to you for her prom dress."
I folded the paper.
My mouth still felt like his.
"Saturday," I said. "I want every woman who ever got married in a Furlong dress on our sidewalk. If they want a crowd, we'll show them one."
Aidan picked the navy flannel up off the floor and put it back on the shelf without taking his eyes off me.
"You're going to need a wall," he said.
Shauna put the call out that night.
If you were married in a Furlong's dress, bring it Saturday. Or your mother's. Or a photo. We're seventy-five, and they want us gone.
Gran stood beside her at the desk and read it twice.
"Put my name on it," she said.
On Saturday morning at seven, I unlocked the shop and there was already a woman on the step.
She was about eighty.
She had a dress box tied up with string on her lap, and she was sitting on a folding chair she'd brought from home.
"1962," she said. "Peau de soie. Your great-grandmother made it, and your grandmother sewed the buttons. I want it in the window."
By nine, the line went down the block.
By ten, it went around the corner onto Union Park.
They came in pairs and threes.
Mothers and daughters.
The 1989 bride in her lavender twin set, who walked past Gran's desk with her taffeta and hugged me hard.
