Chapter 20: The Hem Lets Go
Twelve days early.
She's twelve days early, and she's small, and I'm standing on a pedestal in a silk dress.
Aidan's hands were under my arms.
"Step," he said. "One step. I've got you."
I stepped down.
The room broke open around us.
Chairs scraped, and somebody was calling 911.
"The van's out front," Aidan said. "It's faster than an ambulance on a Saturday."
"Go," Gran said. "Go. We're right behind you."
Shauna had my bag and my phone and somebody's cardigan.
I took two steps toward the door, and the hem caught under my foot.
The silk pulled tight around my ankles.
"The hem," I said. "I can't walk in the hem."
Aidan didn't hesitate.
He went down on one knee on my great-grandmother's carpet, in front of two hundred women, and took the hem in both hands.
"May I?"
"Do it."
He found the thread with his thumbnail.
He pulled.
My own hand-stitching, every stitch small enough to disappear, let go along the whole front in one long, soft rip.
