Chapter 6: Both Know
"Yes," I said. "I know."
Nash shut his eyes for a second.
"How long?"
"Since my first night. The east stairwell." I folded my arms. "You said 'Done.' I've been thinking about that word for a week."
Hattie, at the door, mouthed a very rude word at the back of his head.
I shook my head at her, and she mimed locking her lips and sat on a canoe to watch.
Nash gave a quiet, breathless laugh.
"The coffee can," he said.
"There's no coffee can."
"There's no coffee can." He rubbed his face. "I told Camille the next morning. She asked what I'd learned, and I told her the one thing I had, and I felt sick for the rest of the day."
"Why did you tell her?"
"Because she was holding something over me."
He walked to the edge of the dock and looked down at the water.
The black roof of the boathouse hung over him like a broken hat.
"Last April somebody burned this place," he said. "The school called it faulty wiring. Camille has a video that says otherwise."
I waited.
"I was here that night," he said. "Alone, with a cigarette I wasn't supposed to have. I smelled gasoline and ran out, and when I got to the grass, the whole roof was going up behind me."
"You didn't set it."
"No."
"Then what's on the video?"
"Me. Coming out of the door with a lighter in my hand."
He said it plainly, and it made me hurt for him a little.
"She's never shown it to anyone," he said. "She doesn't need to. I'm a Reuter. My father sits on the board. If the school finds out the bad boy was filmed leaving a burning building, I'm out, and so is his seat. He wouldn't even ask me whether I did it."
