Chapter 5: The Boathouse

"If you die tonight, I'm telling everyone it was your idea," Hattie whispered.

We were crouched behind the hedge at the edge of the lake, and it was nine-fifteen on Friday night.

Curfew was ten, and I intended to be back in bed by nine-fifty.

If Camille wanted to catch me out after hours, she would have to do it on my schedule.

"You said you knew how to get in," I whispered back.

"My dad has keys to everything. He just doesn't know that I know where he hides them."

She held up a ring with a rubber duck on it.

The boathouse stood fifty yards away, squat and silver in the moonlight.

Its roof had burned last spring, and the whole building was fenced off with yellow tape.

The school had said it was an accident.

Hattie said nobody believed that, and nobody had said so out loud.

"Nash said ten," I said. "I want to see what's waiting before he does."

We went down the grass in a crouch.

The side door was unlocked.

Inside it smelled of wet ash and old rope.

Moonlight fell through the black rafters onto a row of canoes, and the long wooden dock beyond them ran out over the water.

We stood very still.

Nothing moved.

"Well, that's creepy," Hattie breathed.

I walked the length of the room, looking for what I was sure was there.

Camille didn't improvise.

She would want a record.
