Chapter 4: Lab Partners

Chemistry was second period, and the seating chart was already posted on the door.

I found my name in the third row.

Next to it, in the teacher's neat blue pen, was Reuter, N.

It had been switched.

I could see the white-out under the ink.

Somebody had gotten to the chart before first bell, and I knew exactly who.

I sat down and opened my notebook, and a moment later a leather jacket dropped into the seat beside me.

"Funny," Nash said. "Fate."

"Is that what we're calling it?"

"I'm open to other words."

The teacher was a small woman with gray braids who did not like noise.

She wrote a problem on the board and turned around.

"This is a challenge question," she said. "It's not on your syllabus. A year ago nobody solved it in under twenty minutes. The first to finish gets lab priority for the semester."

Camille, in the front row, rolled up her sleeves.

She had won lab priority every semester since ninth grade.

I looked at the board.

It was a limiting reagent problem with a catch in the third line.

I knew the catch, because my mill-town high school had a teacher who loved catches, and he had spent four years of his life teaching three of us how to find them.

I picked up my pencil.

"Don't," said Nash quietly.

"Don't what?"

"Don't beat her." He kept his eyes on the board. "Not in front of everyone. She'll never forgive it."
