Chapter 14: Burn

I shifted at a dead run.

It was easier now.

My clothes tore off in ribbons, and by the time I hit the pasture fence I was on four legs and flying.

The three figures on the hill saw me coming.

Two of them dropped to the ground and shifted, brown and tan, big wolves with Saskia's family stamped all over them.

The Hollow wolves.

I'd seen them at every council meeting, the quiet cousins who sat at the back of the hall in oiled coats and never spoke.

The third stayed human.

He lifted a long rifle to his shoulder.

My wolf didn't slow.

Take the guns first, she said.

I know.

I took the first wolf at the shoulder.

We went down in a roll of fur and snow, and he sank his teeth into my flank, and I felt it, hot and bright.

It was the first pain I'd had in my new body.

I snarled and clamped my jaws on the back of his neck and shook him.

He yelped and let go.

The second hit me from behind.

I spun, and my claws raked across his muzzle, and he screamed and rolled away with his face in his paws.
