Chapter 24: Ten Operating Rooms
I took the elevator down with my coat over my arm and the kidney card in my pocket.
Harbor's main lobby locked at seven.
After that, visitors had to wait in the glass vestibule between the two sets of doors until security buzzed them through.
My mother was standing in the vestibule.
The big gray-haired security officer from the ER was at his desk on my side of the glass.
He saw me coming and stood up.
"I didn't let her in," he said. "She's asking for you. I told her I'd call up. That's all I promised."
"Thank you."
"You want me to send her away?"
I looked through the glass.
She'd lost weight.
She wore a plain black coat, no pearls, no velvet.
Her silver bob had grown out a little at the back, and nobody had fixed it.
"No," I said. "I'll talk to her."
"Through the glass?"
"Through the glass."
I walked up to the inner doors.
There was a little grille set into the glass at face height, for talking.
My mother stepped up to her side of it.
For a moment neither of us said anything.
"You're having it done tomorrow," she said.
"At seven."
"For a bus driver."
"For a man who calls me Gray."
She pressed her lips together.
"Your sister's surgery is Saturday. She's had my name taken off her list. I'm not allowed on the floor." Her voice was soft, as always, but there was something cracked underneath it now. "Your father won't take my calls. My lawyer says I mustn't contact any of you."
