Chapter 25: Making Urine
The first thing I heard was a pulse oximeter, beeping slow and steady.
The second thing was Moira, swearing at a vending machine.
"It took my dollar. It took my dollar on her surgery day."
"Hit it low on the left," I said.
My voice came out like gravel.
Moira turned around so fast she dropped her coffee.
"She's awake. Clare's awake. Somebody write it down."
"I'm a nurse," I said. "I know when I'm awake."
The recovery room ceiling had a water stain shaped like Florida.
My left side felt like somebody had parked the bus on it.
I moved my hand to my belly and found the dressings.
Three small ones on my left side, and one longer one low across my stomach, where they'd taken it out.
That was it.
That was the whole cost, in tape and gauze.
"Pain?" Moira asked.
"Six."
"You're lying. You always say six."
"Seven."
She pushed the button on my pain pump for me and sat back down.
"Don't ask me about him. I don't know anything. Conor said he'd come tell you himself."
"How long ago?"
"Two hours. He's still in there."
I closed my eyes and counted my own breaths.
