Chapter 26: Six Weeks

"You stole it?"

"Borrowed it permanently." He held the sign up so I could see both sides. "It's the old one off the front of my bus. The depot's switching to the digital kind. They were going to throw it in a dumpster."

"So you took it to the hospital."

"I taped it to my IV pole so you'd see it on your way in." He grinned. "Then I figured, she gave me a kidney. She can have a sign."

His sister rolled him in next to my bed.

He reached over and laid the sign across my blanket.

It was heavy and scratched, and someone had drawn a tiny mustache on the zero years ago.

"That was me," he said. "Two thousand nine. Don't tell the depot."

"Your secret's safe."

"How do you feel?"

"Like a bus parked on me."

"Huh. Me too." He patted his own side, very gently. "Yours is in here now. It's working great. The doc says it's the best kidney he's put in all year."

"It's January."

"He said it to me with a straight face." He shrugged. "Still counts."

His sister had started crying again, quietly, behind the wheelchair.

She didn't apologize this time.

She just put her hand on his shoulder and kept it there.

They let me go home on the fourth day.

Conor drove me back to Savin Hill in the Volvo at the speed of a funeral procession.
