Chapter 13: Whose Name
Tobias walked up the dais steps with a pen in his hand.
"Sign here, cousin," he said.
He laid a printed copy of the page on the podium.
"Ratify it tonight and this ends. No police, no court, no more cameras."
I looked at the pen.
Then I looked at four hundred people waiting for the maid to cry.
"Put the page back on the screen," I said to the man at the microphone.
"I'm not sure that's appropriate," he said.
"It's your dinner," I said. "Is it appropriate to call a woman a thief on television and not look at the evidence?"
The master of ceremonies swallowed.
"Put it back up," he said.
The technician glanced at Tobias.
Tobias nodded, because a refusal would look worse.
The signature glowed on the wall again.
"Zoom in on the W," I said. "The bottom left corner."
The technician pinched his screen.
The loop of my W grew until it was the size of a door.
Under it, gray and faint, ran the edge of a printed box.
Beside the box sat two small letters from another page.
