Chapter 15: Rope
Kesh did not run.
She had been waiting for this since the day she walked up the passage.
She stood in front of the whole camp with her wrists tied, and she said, loud enough for the back of the ring to hear:
"Stop."
Hurn looked back over his shoulder.
"The girl is the cave's," he said. "You said so yourself."
"I did not. I said the cave took her."
Kesh stepped forward until she was an arm's length from him.
"And that is because I put her there."
The ring went still.
"I put her there," Kesh said again.
"I walked her to the warm wind. I knew the door because it took me once, too."
A woman gasped.
An old man said a word that was half a prayer and half a curse.
"Look at the hunters' faces," Kesh went on, and her voice shook but did not stop.
"Then look at your own children's. Ask who is eating, and who is not."
A hunter in the ring touched his own full cheek, and looked down at his hand.
Kesh did not look away from Hurn.
"I sent my daughter into that door because it was the only one I knew."
"It was not the cave that robbed you of your meat. Let the girl go."
