Chapter 19: Full Bowls
That night the tribe ate until it hurt.
Nobody had planned a feast.
The women lit every fire the cave mouth could hold, and the hunters hauled the cache across the ice on three sledges.
The sacks Hurn had taken from the camp came back too, found piled in his lodge under a hide.
Lois stood in the middle of it all with her sleeves pushed to the elbow and a stolen pot between her knees.
She had never in her life cooked for so many.
She had never in her life been so happy to.
"Rice goes in first," she told the old woman beside her.
The old woman understood none of it and nodded gravely at every word.
"Then the dried meat, torn small. Then the beans. Not that many. They'll swell."
Ilu stood on an upturned bucket and translated, with great seriousness, half the words wrong.
The old woman added the beans.
Lois let her.
When the stew was ready, the children came first, and Lois let that happen too.
They sat in a row in the snow, blowing on their bowls, with steam on their faces.
Not one of them gulped.
Every one of them looked at the bowl and ate slowly.
