The Brennick Ice Arena held three thousand people, and on Saturday night it was full.
Lenny had dragged Ansel to the first row behind the glass, on the blue line, with a paper cup of cocoa in each hand.
"I don't understand hockey," Lenny said.
"Nobody does."
"You're being weird."
"I'm being supportive."
"You're being a person who owns a Pioneers hat."
Ansel touched the brim.
Torin had left it on his pillow that morning with no note.
It fit perfectly.
The Pioneers skated out to a roar.
Torin was number nineteen, and he came out last, hunched and unsmiling, with his stick in one hand.
He swept a slow lap of the ice, and when he reached the blue line, he stopped.
He looked straight at the glass.
Ansel lifted the cocoa an inch.
Torin's mouth moved, very slightly, in something that was not quite a smile.
"Okay," Lenny said, watching.
