Chapter 15: The Phone
The lodge was too quiet with him gone.
I lay on the big bed in his flannel, with every lamp on, and listened to the lake knock against the pilings.
The Council house sat on the far shore, a twenty-minute boat ride away, and he had been there three hours.
The phone buzzed on the pillow beside me.
I picked it up before the second buzz.
"Tuuli."
Just that, in the voice I knew better than my own.
It came out of the little speaker and slid down my spine.
"Where are you?" I asked.
"In a back room with a cot and a lock on the door."
He breathed out.
"They're arguing about Orvo's chair next door, and I told them I needed to make a call."
"What did you tell them?"
"That my mate was alone."
I pulled the flannel closer around me.
It smelled of him.
"You're supposed to be at the Council."
"I know where I'm supposed to be." A pause. "Are you in my shirt?"
"How did you know that?"
"You made a small sound when you moved. Cotton on skin. Flannel has a softer rustle than your hoodie."
