Chapter 17: After Hours
"My kitchen," I said. "My rules."
Niko leaned back against the steel prep table with the snow melting in his beard and his chest going up and down.
"Yes, Luna."
"Take off your coat."
He took off his coat.
I hung it on the hook by the door, where my hoodie used to hang.
Then I turned and looked at him standing under the hard white light.
For six years I had stood on this floor and scrubbed pots with my back to the wall that listened.
Now I put my palms on his chest and walked him backward until the table caught him at the hips.
"Flannel."
He undid it with big slow fingers and let it drop.
"Thermal."
It went over his head.
He stood bare to the waist among my pots, huge and dark and flushed, and his gaze rested on my hands.
"You're staring at my hands," I said.
"They're the best thing in the room."
"Liar. The stockpot's better."
He laughed, a low rumble that shook the steel.
I pushed him.
He sat on the edge of the prep table, wide and long and cold.
I shoved the folded aprons up to the end.
"Lie back."
He lay back.
The steel rang under his shoulders.
His boots hung off the end, six and a half feet of Alpha stretched out on a counter where I cut onions.
