Chapter 14: A Courtship of Serpents

Saren had never in nine hundred years asked anyone what he should do first.

He asked Ellory on the climb to the high ground, in the black hour before the owls went quiet.

"Tell me where to begin," he said.

"Begin with what?" Ellory said, ahead of him on the path.

"With the twelve. With being wrong about them."

Ellory stopped and turned around. His face was dim in the dark, and Saren could not read it.

"Learn their names," Ellory said. "Start there."

"I know their names. I heard them."

"You heard them. Learn them."

Saren considered this all the way to the top.

The twelve sat around a small fire in a hollow of the rock, wrapped in blankets and wary.

They saw him come over the lip and went still.

Lowen sat down with them, because he had run ahead, and put a hand on the arm of the woman beside him.

The woman was eight months along. She held a boy of two on her knee.

Saren stood at the edge of the firelight.

He was seven feet from the nearest villager. Nobody had ever told him how hard it was to cross seven feet.
