Chapter 16: Hands
Casimir's POV
Leighton's truck stood on the shoulder at the county line at first light, with the engine running and one duffel bag on the seat.
That was everything the council had let him take.
Odile stood in the road with the silver on, and eight wolves behind her, and Sigrid beside me with her braid done tight.
Nobody had told her to come with her face bare.
She'd done it herself.
Leighton got out of the truck and stood in the cold with his hands at his sides.
He looked at Odile first, then at me.
"You could have had my chair," he said. "I offered you the second seat for nine years."
"You offered me an order every morning for nine years," I said. "I gave the seat back."
His eyes went to Sigrid, and for a moment I thought he'd say something worth hearing.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"Say it to the road," Sigrid said. "I'm not here for that."
He nodded once.
He got back in the truck and drove north across the line.
Nobody watched him go.
We all turned and looked at her.
She stood with her chin up, and her mouth moved once.
"That's done," she said.
I put my arm around her, and she let me, there in front of eight wolves.
That night, I let her tie me up.
I hadn't asked.
She had come to the bedroom door in her undershirt, with a length of white boat line coiled over one arm.
"Tonight, I'm not going to be kind to you," she said.
"Yes," I said, before I'd thought about it.
I stripped and lay down on her grandmother's iron bed.
She tied my wrists to the head rail with the line, wide loops with a knot she'd learned on boats, firm and exact.
