Chapter 15: The Road

I pulled on my leggings and Casimir's flannel shirt and went out onto the porch in my socks.

The trucks lined the Point road from the gate to the dock.

Wolves got out of them slowly, in coats, in the light of the porch lamp, and nobody came up the steps.

Dozens of them stood waiting in the yard.

Casimir stood beside me with his jeans on and no shirt, and the cold didn't seem to reach him.

"Do you want me to send them away?" he said.

"No," I said. "Let them say it."

A woman stepped forward from the front of the crowd.

It was the old woman from the bench, the one who had held the green card the longest.

She wore a man's wool coat and carried a covered dish.

"My name doesn't matter," she said. "I sat in that hall in October and made the witness sound at you."

"I did it with my mouth open, Sigrid Ashgrove, because I was told to."

"I'm sorry. I would like you to know that I am."

She came up the steps and put the dish in my hands.

It was still warm.

"Pasties," she said. "You work with your hands. I thought you'd eat."

I couldn't speak for a second.

"Thank you," I said, and that time it meant something else.

After that they came in a line.

A man who had worked beside me at the marina for four years said he had laughed when the Alpha said plain.
