Chapter 14: Armchair
We got home at ten, and I laughed so hard on the porch that I had to hold the rail.
"Don't," Casimir said.
"Interim Alpha, to spring," I said. "She said it the way you order lunch."
"Sigrid."
"And the chair, with his hip, walking up those steps one at a time."
He picked me up off the porch boards, carried me inside, and kicked the door shut behind us.
The fire in the front room had burned down to red, and he fed it two logs without putting me down.
The old armchair sat in front of it, wide as a small bed, green velvet worn to brown on the arms.
My grandmother had read in it every night of her life.
He set me in it sideways, with my legs over one arm.
Then he knelt on the rug in front of the fire and looked up at me.
"You were magnificent," he said.
"You said that Wednesday."
"It was true Wednesday. It's more true tonight."
I put my fingers in his hair.
"Take my boots off," I said.
He did it slowly, one lace at a time, and set each boot by the hearth.
He rolled my socks down, kissed the arch of one foot, and then the arch of the other.
I laughed again, and the laugh turned into a breath.
"Leggings," I said.
He hooked his fingers into the waistband and drew them down, and I lifted my hips for him.
The air was warm on my skin, and the firelight moved on my thighs.
He stayed on his knees and looked at me, bare from the waist down, in my grandmother's chair.
"Tell me what you want," he said.
"I want to do it at the same time," I said.
